Daniel Berlant is the Department Information Officer for CAL FIRE, the state’s fire department. As Department Information Officer, Berlant is CAL FIRE’s headquarters’ media spokesman providing a wide range of information about the department and emergency incidents to the news media. Berlant coordinated and oversaw the State’s Joint Information Center during the 2007 Southern California Fire Siege and again played a huge role during the 2008 Lightning Siege in Northern California where he gave hundreds of interviews to media outlets around the world.

Since 2000, Berlant has worked in a variety of roles for CAL FIRE including a communications assistant and inspector. Berlant was hired permanently in 2005 as a communications specialist where he coordinated the department’s education and outreach program. Following a re-organization in the Communications Office, Berlant took on numerous Public Information Officer duties.

In 2007, Berlant spearheaded a group to reinstitute the department’s basic information officer course to teach employees the importance of media relations and tips on giving interviews. Berlant now provides training for fire service employees on basic media relations and the use of social media for emergency responders.

Away from work, Berlant is a board of trustee member for the Auburn Union School District. He is a graduate from the University of California, Davis.
